Jack Torkelson and Joe Schibig harvest wood from a dead
chestnut tree in Metcalfe Co., KY
(Photos by Joe Schibig)

This blighted  chestnut tree was still alive in 2004 but was dead by 2005.
In January, 2008, the tree was cut into logs and then into boards. (photo
taken in summer, 2004)

Jack Torkelson rigs up a winch to drag the chestnut logs onto his trailer.
(this photo and the following ones were taken Jan., 2008)

Up it comes.

Note the blight cankers on the logs.  This 30-yr. old chestnut tree grew  fast to
make a 14-inch diameter tree before the blight nailed it.  John Hansel (left), the
 property owner, watches the operation.

Lumberjack Will sits on one of the logs.

Jack hauls the logs to a band saw mill and has them cut into fine chestnut boards.
