TN-TACF'S EIGHTH ANNUAL SUMMER MEETING, SATURDAY AUGUST 8, 2009

Activities:  Please join the Tennessee Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation for its annual summer meeting at Chapter President Greg Weaver's farm on Saturday August 8. The morning will be filled with lectures and presentations on a number of current chestnut topics. In the afternoon, we will tour Greg's orchards. The orchards contain hundreds of chestnut trees, including an advanced backcross planting, pure American chestnuts up to forty feet tall, some of which are nut bearing, Allegheny chinquapins, Chinese and Japanese chestnuts, and various hybrids. Also on site are a deer fence, raptor perches to encourage natural control of rodents, and a water catchment and storage structure used to gather water for orchard use. In the woods near the orchard are some native stump sprouts, part of the original American chestnut forest. These trees grow from old root systems that were established in the early 20th century before chestnut blight reached Tennessee. Lunch will be provided. Bring sun protection and insect repellent and wear sturdy shoes for the hike to the orchards.
