10:30 to 11:45 AM --Pizza lunch (compliments of VSCC) and social time
11:45 to 11:50 AM --Nancy Morris (Chair of VSCC Science Dept.) welcomes TN-TACF to VSCC
11:50 to 12:00 --Welcome and introductory remarks by Michael Doochin, TN Chapter President
12:00 to 12:15 PM--Talk by Mark Alexander of UT-Chattanooga: "Paleoecology of Castanea dentata in Tennessee"
12:15 to 12:30 PM -- Talk by Lisa Worthen of UT-Chattanooga: "2003 Tenn. Pollinations and Nut Harvest"
12:30 to 1:00 PM --Presentation on Prospective Mother trees in Tennessee for 2004 by Joe Schibig
1:00to 1:30 PM--Presentation on "Status of Castanea dentata at Land Between the Lakes" by Michael Hill
1:30 to 2:00 PM--Presentation on the results of Stephen Alexander's research on hypovirulence and blight resistance.
15 minute break
2:15 to 4:15 PM or longer if necessary--planning and other business.

9:00 to 9:30 AM- Clint Neel gives a presentation on "Starting a Chestnut Orchard"
9:30 to 10:00 AM-- Presentation by Paul Sisco "The Mysteries of Chestnut DNA"
10:00 to 10:30 AM-- Ed Greenwell discusses the art of nut grafting
10:30 to 11:30 AM-- nut grafting using nuts provided by Hill and scions provided by Joe and others.
11:30 AM to 12:00 -- Hill discusses the art of whip and tongue grafting.
12:00 to 1:00 PM- whip and tongue grafting using rootstocks provided by Hill and scions provided by Joe and others
1:00 to 1:30 PM -- Lunch at McDonald's across Hwy 31E for those who want to go on the field trip
1:30 to 2:30 PM- Field trip to a 50' American chestnut tree that is only 15 minutes away from campus.  Click here for photo.

Directions:

The Volunteer State Community College Campus is on US Hwy 31E (1480 Nashville Pike), just southwest of the center of Gallatin, TN.

From the East: Take I-40 westbound to Exit 232. Turn right onto TN 109 north toward Gallatin. In the center of Gallatin, turn left onto US 31E south (Nashville Pike) toward Nashville. The Volunteer State Community College campus entrance will be on your right in just a mile or so. (1480 Nashville Pike).

From the West: Take I-40 eastbound to I-65 North. Turn right at Exit 95 onto TN 386 north , which is the Hendersonville by-pass. In 9.5 miles you will merge onto US 31E heading northeast toward Gallatin. The Volunteer State Community College campus entrance will be on your left in about 4 miles.

From the North: Take I-65 South to Tenn Exit 2 (Franklin, Kentucky exit). After exiting, turn left onto US 31W in the direction of Portland, Tennessee; in 2.4 miles, take TN 109 (Ronnie McDowell Parkway) south through Portland in the direction of Gallatin. When you get into the town center of Gallatin, turn right onto US31E in the direction of Nashville. The Volunteer State Community College campus entrance will be on your right in just a mile or so.
