GRADE DETERMINATION:
Grades will be calculated using this weighting system:
Two of the lab exercises are included in the packet with your star and planet locator that you bought at the bookstore. The other labs are in the packet given out at orientation. The Observation Log will constitute one lab, also. Note that this Observation Log should be done on an on-going basis. Don’t try to do it in one or two nights.
Each homework exercise consists of a set of questions for each lesson. You can find the questions linked to the homepage of this course.
Make-up exams will be available, provided you give adequate justification. They will be administered at the College at Home Office (ext. 3409) for a short time after the scheduled exams. Contact me immediately if you need to arrange a make-up exam. An appointment must be made with the College at Home office prior to taking any test there.
A schedule for the Dyer Observatory’s Public Nights is available at Dyer’s web site, http://www.dyer.vanderbilt.edu. If you attend one of these sessions and turn in a written description of your experiences, you will receive up to a 20-point bonus homework grade. (While I encourage you to attend as many sessions as you can, you will only receive one bonus grade.) When you go, make sure you sign the guest roll, in case verification of your attendance is needed.
CHEATING:
All work is to be done independently. Cheating will not be tolerated. If you cheat on the midterm or final exam, you will earn an F in the course. Any other instances of cheating will result in at least a zero on that assignment. Be aware that cheating can be receiving or giving unapproved aid on an assignment.
