Course Information

Course Description:  This course is designed for students wishing to keep physically fit through strenuous exercise.  The student will study the effect exercise have on the body.   

Course Objectives:  

1.  Develop a more efficient level of cardiovascular fitness.

2.  Improve his/her level of muscular and strength endurance.

3.  Develop a level of abdominal strength appropriate to the student's age and physical condition.

4.  Be proficient in performance of selected basic motor skills.

5.  Improve his/her level of flexibility.

6.  Identify and discuss the reasons why people do or do not exercise.

7.  Calculate his/her target zone heart rate.

8.  Discuss the reasons for warming up and cooling down from exercise.

9.  Discuss the role of exercise in weight control.

10.  Identify and discuss safety measures associated with exercising.

Prerequisites:   The following are key precautions that are stressed in class before starting a workout program.  Student should have a physical examination prior to taking an activity course.  Otherwise, the student will be taking the course at his or her own risk.  Follow the following guidelines.

 

First inform your doctor and observe these guidelines:

  1. Under 30 You can start exercising if you've had a check-up within the past year

    and the doctor found nothing wrong with you.  

  2. Between 30 and 39:  You should have a checkup within three months before you start exercising.  The examination should include an electrocardiogram (EKG) taken at rest.

  3. Over 40 Same as for the 30-39 group with one important addition. Your

     doctor should also take an EKG to check your heart while you are exercising. (This is called a stress test.) 

Specific Course Requirements:  Each class meeting will include some of the following for the 70 Minute Workout  Phase:     

  • Warm-up (Cardio for 5 minutes)

  • Stretching (10 minutes of stretching, 3 repetitions per stretch)

  • Cardiovascular  (Bikes, Treadmill, Elliptical, Spinning Bikes)

  • Training and Target Heart Rate

  • Strength Training for Upper & Lower Body

  • Resist-a-Ball 

  • Spinning

  • Cool down

Assessment and Grading

Testing Procedures:   Tests over the terms obtained through handouts.  The Final-term exam is a Multiple Choice, Matching, and Short Answer Exam. 

Grading Procedure:  100 Possible  Point Values for This Course: 

These points are awarded on the following basis:  At the end of the grading period, the total number of

points will be added together to determine the letter grade for the Maymester.

 

1.  70 points - Attendance, punctuality, proper dress,  participation and instructor observation–  Each student will turn in a daily log of the activity completed as personal workout program on the sheets provided.  The Journal will be turned in the last day of class.  Remember, you are graded on participation in the class and you cannot receive a grade if you do not participate.  There is no substitute for class  participation.  Students must wear shorts, sweats, jogging clothes, or appropriate athletic apparel.  Jeans are not acceptable for class participation, and tennis shoes must be worn at all times.  Individual difference will be considered for the course.  Physical performance results are not used for a grade.  If you do not participate, an absence will be recorded.   

 

2.  10 points - Internet Assignment Each student is responsible for finding (5) quality Internet sites on Health & Fitness and provides a brief  review of the content and quality of information that it provides.  The sites must be from five different categories.  I am looking for legitimate and high quality sites.  Particularly those are somewhat interactive.  Also, focus on the types of sites that are “permanent” rather than a news clip.  All summaries must be written in the illustration given from the instructor.  All

summaries MUST be typed and should be one-half to one page in length.  The article must be typed and double-spaced.

 

3.  10 points – Individual Fitness Assessment, See Instructor.  After the assessment, each student will write a two or more typed written pages summarizing the results and how the information can help with lifestyles changes. 

 

4.  10 points – A test will be given the last day of the Maymester to determine knowledge of the following: 

a.     The FITT Formula

b.     Target Heart Rate

c.      Major Muscle Identifications

d.     Exercise Knowledge for Muscle Groups

e.     Exercise Room Etiquette

f.      Benefits of Fitness

Grading Scale:

The grading scale is based on the following:

90 ‑ 100 = A
80 ‑  89 =  B
70 ‑  79 =  C
60 ‑  69 =  D
 60< =  F
Incomplete=    I

Mid-term Deficiencies “Students who are in danger of receiving a grade below the accepted minimum at mid-term will receive by mail notices indicating the lack of satisfactory progress.”  

N =Audit - No grade or credit.  The student must have registered as an audit in order to receive this grade.

W=Withdrawal - A grade of W is given by the admissions office after a student has processed a drop/add  form through the Admissions Office.  Note:  The instructor does have the right to administratively withdraw a student from class resulting in a grade of W; but this is not automatic.  Students wishing to withdraw must do so through SOTEP and the Admissions Office.  Please consult with me prior to withdrawing from the course.

I=Incomplete - An incomplete is given at the discretion of the instructor and must meet the following conditions: 

(a) Student attends regularly.

(b) Student has completed 80% of the course work and is passing.

(c) The instructor feels the student can realistically complete the course work in the following semester.

 

Note:  If the course work is not completed prior to the exam period of the following semester, the grade is automatically converted to an F by the Admissions Office.

Class Participation

1.  Daily participation means actively taking part in the daily workout.  Your fitness level will not improve without moving.  You need to be involved in-class workouts.  You will not be allowed to sit and observe the class.  There may be occasions when a person has an illness or other minor, temporary injury/disability that prevents him/her from actively participating.  If this is the case, students should come to class and inform the instructor of their illness/injury.  The instructor will recommend whether the student is dismissed from class or they should remain in class and listen and observe and not be counted absent.  Remember, you are graded on participation and you cannot receive a grade if you do not participate.

Class Attendance:  You are expected to attend all classes and be on time.  In the case of an emergency, an excused absence will be require contact with the instructor within 48 hours and the excused absences will be determined on a case by case basis.  The following illness, death in the family are the ONLY basis for excused absence.  Attendance will be recorded at each class meeting.  One (1) cut permitted all other cuts will count against you.

Punctuality:   It is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor when he/she is tardy I order to avoid being marked absent.  Three tardiness will count as a class cut.
Course Ground Rules

NOTE:   I HAVE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR EXCUSES!!!!

  1. Daily  participation required

  2. Learn how to navigate WebCT course using for course enhancement

  3. Keep abreast of course announcements on WebCT

  4. Use the assigned college e-mail address on WebCT for communication with the instructor

  5. Address technical problems immediately with a phone call to the instructor

  6. Students must dress.  When not dresses, you will lose one point from your final grade total points

  7.  Children are not allowed to attend class

  8. The policy relating to cheating and student conduct can be found in the College Student Handbook

  9. It is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor when he/she is tardy in order to avoid being marked absent.  Three tardiness will count as a class cut.

  10. All students will be required to dress appropriately for all workouts.  Students not dressing appropriately will not be allowed to participate in the workouts, which will result in lost of attendance points

  11. Leaving the class early will result in the lost of attendance points

  12. Attendance is Essential!

  13. Food, drink and smoking not permitted during or in class.  Only one exception that is water

Check email under WebCT course Physical Conditioning.  Use student VSCC e-mail account.   Always include a subject line when sending an e-mail.  Go to the www.volstate.edu/ WebCT email and follow the instructions.  The professor will send a reply within 24 hour from receiving your email.  Use standard 12 points.

Financial Attendance Policy
If you are receiving Title IV financial assistance (PELL GRANT, Student Loan or SEOG grant), you must regularly attend class a (minimum of the first full week) or be subject to repay PART or ALL of the federal Financial Aid you receive for the semester.
