COURSE                    Video Walking     

                                    PHED 1190

                                    1 hour credit

 

CATALOG                 PHED 1190  Video Walking (1)  This course is designed for  

DESCRIPTION         the nontraditional student desiring to take an activities class outside of   

                                    campus.  The student will study the benefits of cardiovascular exercise  

                                    through walking and other related fitness exercises.

COURSE                    1)  To evaluate your current level of fitness.

OBJECTIVES            2)  To emphasize the importance of and discuss guidelines for the proper

                                              selection of walking shoes.

3)  To develop/maintain cardiorespiratory endurance.

4)  To improve nutritional habits.

5)  To develop positive stress management skills.

6)  To establish a desire for lifestyle changes which result in an improved                                   

quality of life.

                                   

COURSE                    1)  Students will be required to walk a minimum of two times per week

ACTIVITIES                   for a minimum time of 35 minutes.  Workouts should be recorded on

                                         weekly log sheets.  Students should take a minimum of two heart

                                         rates per workout and record those on the log as well as distance

                                         walked and time.  If all of this information is not included or it is

                                         turned in late points will be deducted.

 

2) You will be required to turn in worksheets from the required text on the        

     listed dates.  Assignments can be placed in my office.  Or they can be

     mailed, but must be post marked the day before they are due. No

     excuses will be accepted for late assignments.

 

3)    You will collect, read and summarize two recent (within the last year)

     magazine articles on fitness walking.  The articles should be a

     minimum of two pages in length but the summary may be two

     paragraphs in length.  All articles must be typed.  These      

     articles should include author, title of journal, date, and page numbers.

     Please include a copy of the magazine article.

 

4)  The post records will be maintained for each student:

 

Resting Pulse/Target Heart Rate

12 Minute Walk Test

 

5)  You will be graded according to your post walking fitness test.  Grades

     will be according to the scale listed on the last page of the syllabus.

 

6)  You will have a written test which will cover material from the

     worksheets. 

 

7)  Each of the following areas will determine your grade:

 

    1)  Written Test - 20%

    2)  2 Written Articles - 15%

3)  Worksheets - 15%

4)  Workout Logs - 30%

5)  Post Walking Test - 20%

 

 

 

Safety concerns when walking, class directives and assignment dates will be discussed the first day of class.  You must pick up video for the course at the College At Home Desk on the second flood of the Library.

 

 

Date:        August 9, 2003                         Class will record test records.  The Rockport Walking Test will be administered at the end of the semester.

ALL FINAL EXAMS MUST BE TAKEN WEEK OF AUGUST 9TH AT COLLEGE AT HOME DESK ON SECOND FLOOR OF THE LIBRARY
