Course Information
Course Description:
This course is designed for the nontraditional student desiring to take an activities class outside of campus.  This course is designed for students desiring to keep physically fit through the aerobic exercise of walking.  The study will study the value of walking in producing cardiovascular fitness as well as expending calories.

Course Objectives:

  1. To evaluate your current level of fitness

  2. To emphasize the importance of and discuss guidelines for the proper selection of walking shoes

  3. To develop/maintain cardiorespiratory endurance

  4. To improve nutritional habits

  5. To develop positive stress management skills

  6. To establish a desire for lifestyle changes which result in an improved quality of life

  7. Identify guidelines for planning a personal walking program

  8. To Take the Rockport Walking Assessment

  9. To Identify the importance of physical fitness components in the development of a  walking program

  10. To Understand How Fitness Walking Can Bring About Weight Loss

  11. Demonstrate Knowledge Of And Engage In Warm-Up And Cool-Down Activities

  12. Formulate Personal Goals Based On Individual Philosophy of Wellness

  13. Develop An Understanding And Appreciation Of Fitness Walking As An Aerobic Activity As A Means To Establish And Maintain Wellness Throughout The Lifespan

  1. You will be required to use Webct to turn in weekly walking log.  Students will be required to walk a minimum of three times per week for a minimum time of 35 minutes.  Weekly Workouts should be recorded in Webct Log sheet.  Students should take a minimum of two heart rates per workout before the walk and after the walk.  Record the distance you walked and time.  If all of the information is not included no credit will be given.

  2. Assignments must be turned in to the instructor or Holly Harvey in (Noble Caudill Hall Building Rm., N207-B).  All assignments should be presented in a protective folder with a cover sheet.  The assignments can be mailed, but must be post marked the day before they are due.  Every day the assignment is late a half point will be deducted.  After two days late you will receive a zero for that assignment.  No excuses will be accepted for late assignments. 

  3. Each student is responsible for finding five (5) quality Internet sites on Walking.  You must complete a ˝ page brief summary of the content and quality of information in the article.  Use the enclosed “Sample Instruction Form for Web Projects” as a guide for writing your summary.  I am looking for legitimate and high quality sites, particularly those are interactive.  Also focus on the types of sites that are “permanent” rather than a news clip.  All reviews MUST be typed, double-spaced and in 12 point.  The cover sheet should include the course, term, Internet assignment, number of internet articles and reference citation, the site, the author, the publishing date of the sight, your name and date.  All summaries must be on the subject of walking NO LATE INTERNET ASSIGNMENT WILL BE ACCEPTED!  NO EXCUSES!!!

  4. The Rockport Walking Test and 1 minute steps will be administered at the beginning, middle and end of the semester.  If you are absent on a test day, no make up will be given.  These pre, mid, and post records will be recorded for each student:

  5. You will be graded according to your mid and post walking fitness test.  Grades will be according to the scale listed below:

     18: 00 min  - 19:59 min      2.5

  6. You will have a written test, which will cover material from the textbook.  A study sheet is located under study guide for the final exam and in the packet.

Assessment and Grading

Testing Procedures:Testing Procedures:  Written Final Exam will be given at the College @Home Desk July 31-August 6,  2005.  When you are taking the exam please call the College @Home Desk in advance and make an appointment.

Grading Procedure:
You will be graded according to your mid and post walking test.  Grades will be according to the following scale:

 

Each of the following areas will determine your grade

  • Written Test                                 15%

  • 5 Written Articles                          20%

  • Chapter Worksheets                     20%

  • Daily Workout Logs                       15%

  • Mid Walking & Post Walking Test    20%

  • Discussion Board                          10%  

                                                   100%

Grade Criteria – Each student will start each grading period with 100 points.  At the end of the grading period the total number of points will be averaged together to determine the letter grade for the course.

Grading Scale:

The grading scale is based on the following:

90 ‑ 100 = A
80 ‑  89 =  B
70 ‑  79 =  C
60 ‑  69 =  D
      60< =  F
Incomplete=I

N =     Audit - No grade or credit.  The student must have registered as an audit in order to receive this grade.

W=    Withdrawal - A grade of W is given by the admissions office after a student has processed a drop/add  form through the Admissions Office.  Note:  The instructor does have the right to administratively withdraw a student from class resulting in a grade of W; but this is not automatic.  Students wishing to withdraw must do so through SOTEP and the Admissions Office.  Please consult with me prior to withdrawing from the course.

I=    Incomplete - An incomplete is given at the discretion of the instructor and must meet the following conditions: 

(a) Student attends regularly.

(b) Student has completed 80% of the course work and is passing.

(c) The instructor feels the student can realistically complete the course work in the following semester.

Note:  If the course work is not completed prior to the exam period of the following semester, the grade is automatically converted to an F by the Admissions Office.

August 6, 2005 Final Exam - Please meet in T.  WESLEY PICKEL FIELD HOUSE at 12:00 p.m.  Post Assessment, 1 Minute Step Test, 1 Mile Walking Test &  If you are absent you will receive zero point for your Final Grade.  There are NO make-up classes.  All Students Must Attend Class.

Class Participation, Attendance, and Fraudulence:
This class will meet for orientation, Pre-assessment, Mid-assessment. Post-assessment.  Students are expected to communicate with the instructor as a learning resource.  Students should check the course bulletin board frequently for announcements.  Students must actively participate in threaded discussion events.  As per the student handbook, plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of dishonesty are prohibited.  Students guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly, through participation or assistance, are immediately responsible to the instructor of the class.  In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions which may be imposed through the regular institutional procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign an F or a zero for the exercise or examination or assign an F in the course. 

Punctuality:  Failure to meet established assignment deadlines will result in a loss of assignment points.
Course Ground Rules

NOTE:   I HAVE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR EXCUSES!!!!!

  1. All students must have a pre assessment in order to take the post assessment.

  2. You are to wear tennis shoes and proper clothing for this test.

  3. Each student will take Pre assessment is for diagnostic purposes only to show students areas where they need to concentrate for improvement.

  4. Resting Pulse – Should be turned in  by June 13,  2005.

  5. All student will take a 1 Minute Step Test,  and 1 Mile Walking Test in the beginning, middle and end of the course.

  6. Points for the mid and post assessment will be awarded according toward the final grade chart points.  

  7. Written Final exams will be given at the College @ Home desk.  Please make an appointment, in advance, when you are going to to take the test.

  8. You may go to the College @ Home desk and take your exam during the assigned week.

  9. The students mail in the assignment located at the end of each chapters, and the instructor will send comments by email. 

  10. The walking assignments will be recorded after midnight on each Monday starting June 13, 2005 until August 8, 2005.

  11. No late logs will be accepted.

  12. NO MAKE-UPS!

Guidelines for Communications

The instructor will send comments by WebCT email.  Always include a subject line when sending an e-mail. Go to http://vswebct.volstate.edu to enter WebCT.  If you do not know your Username, go to http://www.volstate.edu/email/lookup.asp to look it up.  Your Password is your PIN (your birth date in a six-digit format, mmddyy).  In WebCT, click on [WebCT Email] in the Course Menu in the left column.

The student will send the working log assignment file in the walking Log box,  which the professor then opens, marks, and grades. Then the professor will send a reply email and attach the file that was marked. After completing 3 days of walking and posting your weekly walking information by midnight on each Monday.  The walking assignments will be recorded after midnight No late logs will be accepted.   Walking logs will began on  Monday June 13th.

Use standard 12 points.

Financial Attendance Policy
Students who are receiving Title IV financial assistance (Pell Grant, Student Loan or SEOG Grant) must regularly attend class or be subject to repay PART or ALL of the Federal Financial Aid received for the semester.  For students taking video courses, you must attend the orientation and turn in your first assignment in order to be considered "in attendance".
