Course Information

Course Description:  An activity course based on documented study and research of the eleven components of fitness.  Physical activity along with personal fitness assessments will be required in this course.         

Course Objectives:  The specific objectives based on documented study and research of the eleven components of fitness.  Physical activity along with personal fitness assessments will be required in this course.

Courses Outcomes Statement:  As a result of successful completion of this course, students will have demonstrated an acceptable level of effectiveness in designated fitness concepts.  They will also have demonstrated an ability to apply these principles to their present lifestyles.

 

The General Education Goal:  The general education goal of this course is to

provide students with an opportunity to develop an awareness of the

relationship between physical and mental well being and give training in skills

that can be used to maintain a healthy balance in this relationship.

Prerequisites:  The following are key precautions that are stressed in class before starting a workout program.

First inform your doctor and observe these guidelines:

 1.   Under 30 You can start exercising if you've had a check-up within the

      past year and the doctor found nothing wrong with you.

 2.   Between 30 and 39 You should have a checkup within three months

      before you start exercising.  The examination should include an

      electrocardiogram (EKG) taken at rest.

 3.    Over 40 Same as for the 30-39 group with one important addition.

       Your doctor should also take an EKG to check your heart while you are

       exercising.  (This is called a stress test.)    

Specific Course Requirements:

  1. All assigned labs must be completed by using the sheets in the lab

    manual.  Labs completed on notebook paper are not accepted.   The

    lab sheets in the back of the text are to be torn out and handed in to the

    instructor after each lab is completed. 

  2. Lab make-ups must be approved.  Labs will only be made up in cases of emergency.  (Certain labs will be impossible to make-up.) 

  3. Lab sheets must be completed in full in order to receive credit for the lab.

    Once turned in, it will not be given back for completion. No credit will be

    recorded. 

  4. Students must dress according to each particular lab.  When not dresses, you will lose one point each time from your final average.

Assessment and Grading

Testing Procedures:  Tests over the concepts and theories in the textbook knowledge obtained through class lectures, notes and handouts.  The exam is a Multiple Choice Short Answer Exam. 

Plagiarism:  Cheating, and other forms of dishonesty are prohibited.  Student guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly through participation or assistance, are immediately responsible to the instructor of the class.  In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions which may be imposed through the regular institutional procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign an F or a zero for the exercise or examination or to assign an F in the course.

Grading Procedure:

Grades will be base on knowledge and understanding of concepts of fitness and wellness at the end of the course.  Knowledge and Understanding will be determined by:
Completion of  in class laboratories assignments
Completion of written exam
Quality work on Internet assignment
Work submitted within the stated time periods
Assignment Contents and Point Values

100 Possible  Point Values for This Course: 

There are 100 possible points in this course.  These points are awarded on the following basis:

1.  10 points Mid-Term Exam Objective tests over the concepts and theories in

     the textbook, knowledge obtained through class lectures, notes and

      handouts. 

     

2.  10 points Internet Assignment 

     Each student is responsible for finding (5) quality Internet sites on Health &

     Fitness and provides a 1/2 page brief review of the content and quality of

     information that it provides.  The sites must be from five different

     categories.  I am looking for legitimate and high quality sites.  Particularly

     those are somewhat interactive.  Also focus on the types of sites that

     are “permanent” rather than a news clip.  See Attached Sheet for 

     information or link Internet Assignment.

  

3.  10 points In Class Laboratory Participation 

     Remember, You are graded on participation in the lab and you cannot

     receive a grade if you do not participate.  Participation in a concept class is

     very important.  There is no substitute for class participation.  Students

     must wear either shorts, sweats, jogging clothes, or appropriate athletic

     apparel.  Jeans are not acceptable for class participation, and tennis shoes

     must be worn at all times.  Individual difference will be considered for the

     course.  Physical performance results are not used for a grade.  If

     you don’t participate an absence will be recorded.  Points will not be given

     for incomplete lab material turn in.  Students must follow the dress policies

     in order to participate in laboratory assignments.

4.  10 points Notebook Assignment - Look under  Notebook   

       Assignments  and Projects Labs 1 & 2.

 

5.  10 point -  For using the WebCT discussion board

 

6.  10 Point - Fitness Assessment - Instructor directions

 

7.   30 Points- Planned Fitness program that each student maintain for

     suggested number of weeks by the instructor.

 

8.  10 points – Daily Fitness and Nutrition Journal

 

9.  10 pointsBonus points Students may receive up to 10 points for ten

     extra workouts outside of the regular class time in the fitness facility at

     Volunteer State Community College.  You may not have more than one extra

     workout per week in order to receive this credit. 

 

 10. Late or Missed Assignments - A late or missed assignment (written exam

      and notebook assignments) will receive a grade of zero unless the absence

      is excused and a make-up date can be rescheduled with the instructor.

      Notebook assignments will not be accepted after the final deadline.  

      Remember notebooks assignments can be turned at anytime until the final

      deadline.

Grading Scale:

The grading scale is based on the following:

90 ‑ 100    =   A
80 ‑   89     =    B
70 ‑   79      =   C
60 ‑   69      =    D
Below 60      =    F
Incomplete    =    I

Mid-term Deficiencies “Students who are in danger of receiving a grade below the accepted minimum at mid-term will receive by mail notices indicating the lack of satisfactory progress.”    

N =Audit - No grade or credit.  The student must have registered as an audit in order to receive this grade.

W=Withdrawal - A grade of W is given by the admissions office after a student has processed a drop/add  form through the Admissions Office.  Note:  The instructor does have the right to administratively withdraw a student from class resulting in a grade of W; but this is not automatic.  Students wishing to withdraw must do so through SOTEP and the Admissions Office.  Please consult with me prior to withdrawing from the course.

I=Incomplete - An incomplete is given at the discretion of the instructor and must meet the following conditions: 

(a) Student attends regularly.

(b) Student has completed 80% of the course work and is passing.

(c) The instructor feels the student can realistically complete the course work in the following semester.

 

Note:  If the course work is not completed prior to the exam period of the following semester, the grade is automatically converted to an F by the Admissions Office.

Class Participation

Punctuality:  It is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor when he/she is tardy in order to avoid being marked absent.  Three  tardiness will count as a class cut.

Attendance:  Remember, you are graded on class attendance you cannot receive a grade if you do not attend class. 

Course Ground Rules

NOTE:   I HAVE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR EXCUSES!!!!

  1. Weekly participation required.

  2. Learn how to navigate WebCT course using the class enhancers.

  3. Keep abreast of course announcements.

  4. Use the assigned college or university e-mail address

  5. Address technical problems immediately

  6. Observe course netiquette at all times

  7. Follow course calendar and submit assignments in a timely manner

There will be no extensions granted for required assignments, and there are no opportunities to make up work missed.  All assignments are to be prepared utilizing a word processing program and proofread to eliminate errors.  All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the predetermined date. 

  15. DO NOT EXPECT CREDIT FOR LATE SUBMISSIONS WITHOUT PRIOR WRITTEN APPROVAL FROM THE COURSE INSTRUCTOR.  

Guidelines for Communications

Check email under WebCT course Lifetime fitness and your section number.  Use student e-mail account.   Always include a subject line when sending an e-mail.  Go to the www.volstate.edu/ WebCT email and follow the instructions.  The professor will send a reply within 24 hour from receiving your email.  Use standard 12 points.

Financial Attendance Policy
If you are receiving Title IV financial assistance (PELL GRANT, Student Loan or SEOG grant), you must regularly attend class a (minimum of the first full week) or be subject to repay PART or ALL of the federal Financial Aid you receive for the semester.

Students With Disabilities

Students who require special assistance or accommodations must register with the Office of Disability Services, as early as possible in the semester.  The instructor must be notified of any request.  It is the student's responsibility to inform the instructor if you have a condition that impair or influence participation in the course.  It is the student's responsibility to self identify with the Office of Disability Services in order to receive accommodations.
