Prerequisites:  The following are key precautions that are stressed in class before starting a workout program.

First inform your doctor and observe these guidelines:

1.   Under 30:  You can start exercising if you've had a check-up within the past year

and the doctor found nothing wrong with you.

2.   Between 30 and 39 You should have a checkup within three months before you

start exercising.  The examination should include an electrocardiogram (EKG) taken

     at rest.

 3.   Over 40:  Same as for the 30-39 group with one important addition.  Your doctor

should also take an EKG to check your heart while you are exercising.  (This is

       called a stress test.)

Specific Course Requirements:

  1. Assigned readings in A Wellness Way Of Life.

  2. All assigned labs must be completed by using the sheets in the textbook.  Labs

completed on notebook paper are NOT accepted.  The lab sheets in the back of the

textbook are to be torn out and handed in to the instructor.  All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the predetermined date.

  3. Lab sheets must be completed in full, in order to receive credit for the lab.  Once

turned in, it will not be given back for completion. No credit will be recorded for incomplete work.

  4. Fitness Assessment - Write a paper about three to four pages that details the benefits of your Fitness assessment (i.e. describing how you will set your personal goals using the information from your assessment, what the you have learned from your assessment, and what you will be able to do with your assessment information.

  5. Fitness Journal offers you a winning solution for personal fitness accounting and record keeping. The simple act of writing down your goals and results will push you to a level of success you may not have thought possible! The process to incorporate a training journal into your daily life is very simple and straight forward.

Each student maintain a Fitness Journal from January 31- March 14.

    Plan
The first step toward success is to do a little planning. Decide what it is that you are going to do today. Develop a workout goal to reach today. It is critical that you can start AND finish your goal today. Not tomorrow, but today. This should not be a long term goal, but something that you will have accomplished by the end of your workout, clean and simple. It may be something little, it may be something big, but it’s a goal that you will complete, no questions asked. As you get better at goal setting, you will set more challenging goals.

    Execute
Planning is nothing if action isn't taken. Execution is everything, don't just plan, follow through! Set your goal for the day and make it happen. Don't give up. Feel good knowing that you have successfully completed the task at hand, then stop.

    Record
You've put a lot of effort into planning and then following through with your daily goals. Now record your accomplishments, this is essential. Record what you have accomplished, where you did it, who was there, how you felt, and if you would do it again.

    Review
Print your days workout and put it into your own personal fitness journal. Review what you did today, and what you have accomplished over the last few weeks. Use this information to set your next goals...for tomorrow.

  6. Planned Fitness Program - You are to workout on each Monday from January 31 until  March 14, using weight and cardio equipment

  7. Individual Fitness Program -Each student maintain a Fitness Journal

from January 31- March 14.  Participation in a concept class is very important.  There is no substitute for class participation.  Students must wear either shorts, sweats, jogging clothes, or appropriate athletic apparel.  Jeans are not acceptable for class participation, and tennis shoes must be worn at all times.  Individual difference will be considered for the course.  Physical performance results are not used for these points but a in class fitness journal is required.  If you don't participate an absence will be recorded.

60 ‑  69 =  D
      60< =  F

N =Audit - No grade or credit.  The student must have registered as an audit in order to receive this grade.

W=Withdrawal - A grade of W is given by the admissions office after a student has processed a drop/add  form through the Admissions Office.  Note:  The instructor does have the right to administratively withdraw a student from class resulting in a grade of W; but this is not automatic.  Students wishing to withdraw must do so through SOTEP and the Admissions Office.  Please consult with me prior to withdrawing from the course.

I=Incomplete - An incomplete is given at the discretion of the instructor and must meet the following conditions:

(a) Student attends regularly.

(b) Student has completed 80% of the course work and is passing.

Class Participation

1.      There is no substitute for class participation.  You are expected to actively participate in each class.

Punctuality:  Late for class:  This disturbs fellow students and guest speakers. Lateness is discouraged.

Attendance:  Students are responsible for the content of the course.  Because much of the learning process takes place in the sharing of ideas and thoughts of classmates, attendance at ALL classes is expected. The student is allowed a certain number of absences in which "no penalty" is applied, these absences should be reserved for unusual circumstances.  Further absences will result in points being deducted from the student's grade.  The basis for deduction of these points can be found on the attendance scale which precedes. When a student is participating in a school activity which has been approved by the Dean of the College, the student will not be counted absent, but must make up the work within a week of the scheduled event.  More than two absences will lower your unexcused grade one letter grade.  Excused absences must have the instructor's approval.

3 absences = B

4 absences = C

5 absences = D

     6 absences = F
