Course Information

Course Description:  A study of personal health problems of college men and women.  Mental health, communicable diseases, degenerative diseases, nutrition, drug abuse and other health problems of students and families are studied.

Course Objectives:

  1. Students will increase their understanding of the concepts of disease prevention and wellness and the important role of lifestyle as a determinant of each.  

  2. Students will increase their knowledge of selected disease-prevention and wellness

    issues.

  3. Students will practice skills complementary to the development of a wellness lifestyle.

  4. Students will be encouraged to take responsibility for both personal and community

    aspects of disease prevention and wellness, both in the present and in the future.

Upon completion of this course the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

The General Education Goal: 

The general education goal of this course is to provide students with the general knowledge and an opportunity to develop habits for wholesome living.  This course also seeks to provide opportunities to apply problem- solving skills to life situations.  The course additionally provides an opportunity for further development of oral and written communication.

 

Courses Outcomes Statement:   

The student will be assessed through written examination, class assignments, and class

participation.  The written examination will cover lecture/discussion material.  The class

assignments will require student participation and will be graded on the student

participation in these class assignments.

Prerequisites:  None

Specific Course Requirements:

  1. Assigned readings in Understanding Your Health

  2. Assignments will be presented as noted in the course Calendar.  You will have until the due date to complete each assignment.

  3. You are expected to communicate with your partner in the project, learn how to navigate in WebCT, and stay aware of course announcements.

  4. When available a student may earn extra credit point as directed by the instructor.

  5. Family Health Tree:  Students will track their family history beginning with both maternal and paternal grandparents, father and mother, aunts and uncles, and brothers and sisters. If married with children, be sure to include the young ones.  A health history should accompany each relative’s name.  Include any health issues including diseases and/or chronic irritations (glasses, false teeth, etc.).  Add year of birth and (if appropriate) year of death as well as the cause of death.  This assignment allows for creativity.  The assignment will be evaluated as to neatness, organization, and completeness.   This assignment will be described in more detail on a separate handout.    

  6. Research Paper:  Each student will be required to write a research paper on a current health issue.  This paper will be a point/counterpoint presentation of an issue selected by the student.  (Topics must have the instructor's approval.)  More Information on topics will have explanations in class with further detailed.  Each student must use PowerPoint to present your research material.

  7. Class periods will be divided between lectures, class discussions and projects.

  8. There will be no extensions granted for required assignments, and there are no opportunities to make up work missed.  All assignments are to be prepared utilizing a word processing program and proofread to eliminate errors.  All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the predetermined date. 

  9. DO NOT EXPECT CREDIT FOR LATE SUBMISSIONS WITHOUT PRIOR WRITTEN APPROVAL FROM THE COURSE INSTRUCTOR.

Assessment and Grading

Testing Procedures:  Tests over the chapters in the textbook knowledge obtained through class lectures, notes and handouts.  The exam is a Multiple Choice Short Answer Exam. 

Plagiarism:  Cheating, and other forms of dishonesty are prohibited.  Student guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly through participation or assistance, are immediately responsible to the instructor of the class.  In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions which may be imposed through the regular institutional procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign an F or a zero for the exercise or examination or to assign an F in the course.

 

Grading Procedure:  The following weights will be used to determine your final grade in this course:

  • Individual/Outside Assignments  10 percent

  • Family Health Tree                   20 percent

  • Oral Report Research Project     20 percent

  • Planning Your Funeral               10 percent

  • Individual Fitness Assessment    10 percent

  • Wellness Workshop                  10 percent

Grading Scale:

The grading scale is based on the following:

90 ‑ 100 = A
80 ‑  89 =  B
70 ‑  79 =  C
60 ‑  69 =  D
 60< =  F
Incomplete=    I

Mid-term Deficiencies “Students who are in danger of receiving a grade below the accepted minimum at mid-term will receive by mail notices indicating the lack of satisfactory progress.”  

N =Audit - No grade or credit.  The student must have registered as an audit in order to receive this grade.

W=Withdrawal - A grade of W is given by the admissions office after a student has processed a drop/add  form through the Admissions Office.  Note:  The instructor does have the right to administratively withdraw a student from class resulting in a grade of W; but this is not automatic.  Students wishing to withdraw must do so through SOTEP and the Admissions Office.  Please consult with me prior to withdrawing from the course.

I=Incomplete - An incomplete is given at the discretion of the instructor and must meet the following conditions: 

(a) Student attends regularly.

(b) Student has completed 80% of the course work and is passing.

(c) The instructor feels the student can realistically complete the course work in the following semester.

 

Note:  If the course work is not completed prior to the exam period of the following semester, the grade is automatically converted to an F by the Admissions Office.

Class Participation

1.      There is no substitute for class participation.  You are expected to actively participate in class discussions.

Punctuality:  Late for class:  This disturbs fellow students and guest speakers. Lateness is discouraged.

Attendance:  The student is allowed a certain number of absences in which "no penalty" is applied, these absences should be reserved for unusual circumstances.  Further absences will result in points being deducted from the student's grade.  The basis for deduction of these points can be found on the attendance scale which precedes. "no when a student is participating in a school activity  which has been approved by the Dean of the College, the student will not be counted absent, but must make up the work within a week of the scheduled event.  More than two absences will lower your unexcused grade one letter grade.  Excused absences must have the instructor's approval. 

                                                             

Course Ground Rules

NOTE:   I HAVE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR EXCUSES!!!! 

  1. Exams:  If you miss an exam, you may not make it up.  Exam will be announced in advance so it is your responsibility to be in class the day it is given.

  2. Extra credit:  No extra credit will be accepted, unless assigned by the instructor. 

  3.  Late paper and family tree research:  Five points from final average for each day late.  I do base your grade on the work turned in on time.

  4. Typing:  Paper must be typed, double-spaced on 8 ˝ by 11- inch white paper.  All

    work turned in must be typed

  5. Student Handbook.   Persistent unexcused absences can result in the instructor having the student administratively withdrawn form the class.  The procedure involves the recommendation of the instructor to administratively withdraw the student.  If the Dean of the College approves the recommendation, the student is withdrawn from the class.

Guidelines for Communications

Electronic mail may be used to clarify and/or seek additional information on assignments or to otherwise communicate with the professor.  Under no circumstances should students rely on e-mail to get information presented in class. Please note:  you will receive a faster response if contacting me by e-mail using WebCT.  If contacting me by phone, please leave a message for me on the office line.  Say your name clearly and give  your telephone number, first.  Then leave your message.  If you do not have an answering machine, and your call has not been returned within 24 hour during regular business days, please call again.  I will not discuss or give out any grades by telephone.  If you do not have an answering machine, it will be your responsibility to call me back if I am unable to leave a message.  If you use email in WebCT look under your course Personal Health and your section number.  Always include a subject line when sending an e-mail.  The professor will send a reply within 24 hour from receiving your email.  Use standard 12 points.

Financial Attendance Policy
If you are receiving Title IV financial assistance (PELL GRANT, Student Loan or SEOG grant), you must regularly attend class a (minimum of the first full week) or be subject to repay PART or ALL of the federal Financial Aid you receive for the semester.

Students With Disabilities
