Course Information
Course Description:
This course is designed for the nontraditional student desiring to take an activities class outside of campus.  This course is designed for students desiring to keep physically fit through the aerobic exercise of walking.  The study will study the value of walking in producing cardiovascular fitness as well as expending calories.

Course Objectives:

  1. To evaluate your current level of fitness

  2. To emphasize the importance of and discuss guidelines for the proper selection of walking shoes

  3. To develop/maintain cardiorespiratory endurance

  4. To improve nutritional habits

  5. To develop positive stress management skills

  6. To establish a desire for lifestyle changes which result in an improved quality of life

  7. Identify guidelines for planning a personal walking program

  8. To Take the Rockport Walking Assessment

  9. To Identify the importance of physical fitness components in the development of a  walking program

  10. To Understand How Fitness Walking Can Bring About Weight Loss

  11. Demonstrate Knowledge Of And Engage In Warm-Up And Cool-Down Activities

  12. Formulate Personal Goals Based On Individual Philosophy of Wellness

  13. Develop An Understanding And Appreciation Of Fitness Walking As An Aerobic Activity As A Means To Establish And Maintain Wellness Throughout The Lifespan

  1. Specific Course Requirements:
    You will be required to use WebCT to turn in weekly walking log.  Students will be required to walk a minimum of three times per week for a minimum time of 35 minutes.  Weekly Workouts should be recorded on WebCT Log sheet.  Students should take a minimum of two heart rates per workout.  A heart rate before the walk and after your walk.  Record the  distance walked and time.  If all of information is not included no credit will be given.

  2. Assignment must be turned into my office (T.  Wesley Pickel Field House Rm., 121) or Holly Harvey in (Noble Caudill Hall Building Rm., N207-B).  All assignments should be presented in a protective folder with a cover sheet.  The assignments can be mailed, but must be post marked the day before they are dueNo excuses will be accepted for late assignments.  

  3. Each student is responsible for finding five (5) quality Internet sites on Walking and provides a 1/2 page brief review of the content and quality of information that it provides.  I am looking for legitimate and high quality sites.  Particularly those are somewhat interactive.  Also focus on the types of sites that are “permanent” rather than a news clip. See link Internet Assignment for the specifies of how to write the internet project up.  All summaries must be written in the illustration given from the instructor.  All summaries MUST be typed and should be one page to one and a half pages in length and double-spaced and written in 12 point font.  Cover sheet should include the course, term, Internet assignment, number of internet articles and reference citation, the site, the author and publishing date of the sight, your name and date.  All summaries must be about walking

     

      NO LATE INTERNET ASSIGNMENT WILL BE ACCEPTED!  NO EXCUSES!!!

     

  4. The Rockport Walking Test and 1 minute steps will be administered at the beginning, middle and end of the semester.  If you are absent on a test day, no make up will be given.  Pre, mid, and post times will be recorded for each student:

  5. You will be graded according to your mid and post walking fitness test.  Grades will be according to the scale listed below:

    MID & POST WALKING FITNESS GRADING  SCALE

     

    12:00 min   -  13:59 min    10

     14:00 min   - 15:59  min     7.5

    16:00 min  - 17:59 min      5

     18: 00 min  - 19:59 min      2.5 

    20:00 min - and over        0 

     

  6. You will have a written test, which will cover material from the textbook.  A study sheet is located under study guide for the final exam.

Testing Procedures:
Written Final Exam will be given at the College @Home Desk
April 24, May 1, 2004.  When you are taking the exam please call the College @Home Desk in advance and make an appointment. 

Grading Procedure:
You will be graded according to your mid and post walking test.  Grades will be according to the following scale:

 

Each of the following areas will determine your grade

  • Written Test                              15%

  • 5 Written Articles                        20%

  • Chapter Worksheets                    20%

  • Daily Workout Logs                     15%

  • Mid Walking & Post Walking Test    20%

  • Discussion Board                         10%  

                                                  100%

Grade Criteria – Each student will start each grading period with 100 points.  At the end of the grading period the total number of points will be averaged together to determine the letter grade for the course.

Grading Scale:

The grading system is based on the following:

90 ‑ 100      =   A
80 ‑   89     =    B
70 ‑   79     =    C
60 ‑   69      =    D
Below 60      =    F
Incomplete   =    I

 

Mid-term Deficiencies “Students who are in danger of receiving a grade below the accepted minimum at mid-term will receive by mail notices indicating the lack of satisfactory progress.”  

 

N =     Audit - No grade or credit.  The student must have registered as an audit in order to receive this grade.

W=    Withdrawal - A grade of W is given by the admissions office after a student has processed a drop/add  form through the Admissions Office.  Note:  The instructor does have the right to administratively withdraw a student from class resulting in a grade of W; but this is not automatic.  Students wishing to withdraw must do so through SOTEP and the Admissions Office.  Please consult with me prior to withdrawing from the course.

I=    Incomplete - An incomplete is given at the discretion of the instructor and must meet the following conditions: 

(a) Student attends regularly.

(b) Student has completed 80% of the course work and is passing.

(c) The instructor feels the student can realistically complete the course work in the following semester.

Note:  If the course work is not completed prior to the exam period of the following semester, the grade is automatically converted to an F by the Admissions Office.

Class Participation or Attendance:
This class will meet for orientation, Pre-assessment, Mid-assessment. Post-assessment.  The following are mandatory classes. Students must introduce themselves to each other on Vol State's WebCT.  Students are encouraged to communicate with others students using the discussion board.  Students are expected to communicate with the instructor as a learning resource.  Students must check the course bulletin board frequently for announcement, and students must actively participate in treaded discussion events.

Punctuality:
Failure to meet established assignment deadlines will result in a loss of assignments points.
Course Ground Rules
 

NOTE:   I HAVE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR EXCUSES!!!!!

  1. All students must have a pre assessment in order to take the post assessment.
  2. You are to wear tennis shoes and proper clothing for this test.
  3. Each student will take Pre assessment is for diagnostic purposes only to show students areas where they need to concentrate for improvement.
  4. Resting Pulse – Should be e-mailed by  January 26, 2004
  5. All student will take a 1 Minute Step Test,  and 1 Mile Walking Test in the beginning, middle and end of the course.
  6. Points for the mid and post assessment will be awarded according toward the final grade chart points.  
  7. Written Final exams will be given at the College @ Home desk. 
  8. You may go to the College @ Home desk and take your exam during the assigned week.
  9. When you are going to take the test at the College @ Home desk please call them in advance.
  10. NO MAKE-UP.
  11. The students will physically turn or mail in the assignment located at the end of the chapters, and the instructor will send comments by email. 

  12. No late logs will be accepted.

  13. The walking assignments will be recorded after midnight on each Monday starting January 26, 2004 until April 26, 2004.

Guidelines for Communications

The instructor will send comments by WebCT email.  Always include a subject line when sending an e-mail. Go to http://vswebct.volstate.edu to enter WebCT.  If you do not know your Username, go to http://www.volstate.edu/email/lookup.asp to look it up.  Your Password is your PIN (your birth date in a six-digit format, mmddyy).  In WebCT, click on [WebCT Email] in the Course Menu in the left column.

Use Vol State's WebCT for e-mailing.  The student can attach the working log assignment file to an email, which the professor then opens, marks, and grades. Then the professor will send a reply email and attach the file that was marked.  After completing 3 days of walking and post your weekly walking information by midnight on each Monday.   Use standard 12 points font.

Financial Attendance Policy
For students receiving federal financial aid, ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY.  For students taking video courses, you must attend the orientation and turn in your first assignment in order to be considered "in attendance".
