Course Information

Course Description:  The course is designed for students wishing to get physically fit through endurance, strength, and interval training on a stationary cycle.  The students will continuously monitor their heart rate during the training session. 

Course Objectives:

 

This course is aimed to help each student:

 

1.  Understand the benefits of the health related fitness.

2.  Understand the safety precautions and injury preventions in cycling.

3.  Improve general fitness levels, especially the aerobic capacity of the

     individual.

4.  Develop a healthy lifestyle through aerobic fitness.

5.  Practice heart rate monitoring while participating in aerobic exercise.

6.  Develop an understanding of the basic fundamental:  warm-up, aerobic

     routines, body toning, cool-down, and relaxation in an aerobic dance

     program.

7.  Understand and apply the fundamental exercise and nutrition.

8.  Have fun and enjoy life while exercising.

9.  Provide the opportunity to improve fitness.

10.Expose to methods of objectively evaluating diverse fitness programs.

 

The General Education Goal: 

The general education goal of this course is to provide  students with an

opportunity to develop an awareness of the relationship between physical and

mental well being and give training in skills that can be used to maintain a

healthy balance in this relationship.

 

Courses Outcomes Statements:  As a result of successful completion of this course the students will have demonstrated an acceptable level of mastery in designated physical skills.

Prerequisites and Co-requisites:    Please consult a physician before beginning this program.  The following are key precautions that are stressed in class before starting a workout program.

 

First inform your doctor and observe these guidelines:

  1. Under 30 You can start exercising if you've had a check-up within the past year and the doctor found nothing wrong with you.  

  2. Between 30 and 39:  You should have a checkup within three months before you start exercising.  The examination should include an electrocardiogram (EKG) taken at rest.

  3.  Over 40 Same as for the 30-39 group with one important addition.   Your doctor should also take an EKG to check your heart while you are exercising. (This is called a stress test.) 

Specific Course Requirements:
 

WHAT KIND OF CLOTHING AND GEAR DO I NEED?

Although you don't need a new wardrobe to take a cycling class, here are recommendations:

  • Padded cycling shorts

  • Moisture wicking top to keep you cool and dry

  • stiff-soled athletic shoes or cycling shoes

  • water bottle (Remember 40 for 40 rule - try to drink a total of 40 ounces of water before, during and after each 40-minutes class

  • Workout towel

  • Heart rate monitor (a great way to control/measure the intensity of your workout)

  • A great attitude!  You control your ride.

Assessment and Grading

Testing Procedures:   Tests over the terms obtained through handouts.  The Final-term exam is a Multiple Choice, and Matching.  

Plagiarism:  Cheating, and other forms of dishonesty are prohibited.  Student guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly through participation or assistance, are immediately responsible to the instructor of the class.  In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions which may be imposed through the regular institutional procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign an F or a zero for the exercise or examination or to assign an F in the course.

Grading Procedure:  100 Possible  Point Values for This Course: 

These points are awarded on the following basis:

 

1.  Participation (80 points value)   Daily participation means actively taking part in the cycling class.  Your fitness level will not improve without cycling.  You need to be involved each class workout.  You will not be allowed to sit on the cycle and observe the class.  There may be occasions when a person has an illness or other minor, temporary injury/disability that prevents him/her from actively participating.  If this is the case, students should come to class and inform the instructor of their illness/injury.  The instructor will recommend whether the student is dismissed from class or they should remain in class and listen and observe and not be counted absent.  Remember, you are graded on participation in spinning and you cannot receive a grade if you do not participate.

2. Written Examination (20 points value) -  (Final Exam)

    Cheating will not be tolerated. 

 

3.     Late or Missed Assignments - A late written exam will receive a grade of

    zero, unless the absence is excused and a make-up date is rescheduled with

    the instructor within one week.  

 

4.   Grade Criteria – Each student will start each grading period with 100

     points.  The participation will be recorded on the minus basis for each

     class.  At the end of the grading period, the total number of points will be

     added together to determine the letter grade for the semester.

Grading Scale:

The grading scale is based on the following:

 

90 ‑ 100 = A
80 ‑  89 =  B
70 ‑  79 =  C
60 ‑  69 =  D
 60< =  F
Incomplete=    I

Mid-term Deficiencies “Students who are in danger of receiving a grade below the accepted minimum at mid-term will receive by mail notices indicating the lack of satisfactory progress.”  

N =Audit - No grade or credit.  The student must have registered as an audit in order to receive this grade.

W=Withdrawal - A grade of W is given by the admissions office after a student has processed a drop/add  form through the Admissions Office.  Note:  The instructor does have the right to administratively withdraw a student from class resulting in a grade of W; but this is not automatic.  Students wishing to withdraw must do so through SOTEP and the Admissions Office.  Please consult with me prior to withdrawing from the course.

I=Incomplete - An incomplete is given at the discretion of the instructor and must meet the following conditions: 

(a) Student attends regularly.

(b) Student has completed 80% of the course work and is passing.

(c) The instructor feels the student can realistically complete the course work in the following semester.

 

Note:  If the course work is not completed prior to the exam period of the following semester, the grade is automatically converted to an F by the Admissions Office.

Class Participation

Class Attendance:  You are expected to attend all classes and be on time.  In the case of an emergency, an excused absence will be require contact with the instructor within 48 hours and the excused absences will be determined on a case by case basis.  Only two excused make-ups days will be allowed.  You will be required to attend the fitness center with the approval of the same instructor to make up, the excused absence and no points will be deducted for excused absences.  The following illness, death in the family or special school activities are the ONLY basis for excused absence.  Attendance will be recorded at each class meeting.  One (2) cut permitted all other cuts will count against you.

Punctuality:  You must arrive ten minutes before class to make sure your bike is read at the beginning of class.  Three tardiness will count as a absence. 
Course Ground Rules

NOTE:   I HAVE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR EXCUSES!!!!

  1.  Participants should use the first ride as an "orientation" to cycling not to  try and keep up or train on the first ride.

  2. Learn how to navigate WebCT course using for course enhancements.  Keep abreast of course announcements on WebCT.  Use the assigned college e-mail address WebCT.

  3. Cycling is for everybody.  Young, old, athlete, novice, man or woman.  A

    deconditioned individual can sit next to a professional athlete and still benefit greatly from the ride.

  4. Towel is mandatory for class.

  5. Address technical problems immediately with a phone call.

  6. Students must dress.  When not dresses, you will lose one point per time

    from your final grade.

  7. Children are not allowed to attend class.  

  8. Arrive early to set up your bike.

  9. Pace yourself during training sessions.  Only perform movements that feel 

    comfortable and keep you in your chosen heart rate training.

  10. Relax your abdominals and breathe deeply, in through the mouth.

    Diaphragmatic breathing is the most efficient and relaxing way to breathe.

  11. Be sure to eat 1-2 hours before a Cycling class - avoid riding on an empty stomach.  The better "fuel" you have in your "engine" the better it will run.

  12. Relax your muscles.  Relaxing will allow you to perform with less stress and more efficiency.

  13. Train at your own level.  There is no competition in cycling, and you should always train at a level you feel most comfortable.

  14. Always bring water to class.  Proper hydration is essential to performance and keeps the body cool during exercise.

  15. Students should stay in control.  Force on form and smooth transitions between movements.

  16. If you begin to feel faint or dizzy, slowly stop pedaling and carefully dismount from the bike.  Inform the instructor immediately! 

    Remember you cannot get fit in one workout.

Guidelines for Communications

Please note:  you will receive a faster response if contacting me by e-mail using WebCT.  If contacting me by phone, please leave a message for me o the office line.  Say your name clearly and give  your telephone number, first.  Then leave your message.  If you do not have an answering machine, and your call has not been returned within 24 hour during regular business days, please call again.  I will not discuss or give out any grades by telephone.  If you do not have an answering machine, it will be your responsibility to call me back if I am unable to leave a message.  If you use email in WebCT look under your course Stationary Cycling and your section number.  Always include a subject line when sending an e-mail.  The professor will send a reply within 24 hour from receiving your email.  Use standard 12 points.

Financial Attendance Policy
If you are receiving Title IV financial assistance (PELL GRANT, Student Loan or SEOG grant), you must regularly attend class a (minimum of the first full week) or be subject to repay PART or ALL of the federal Financial Aid you receive for the semester.

Students With Disabilities
