PHED 1000 – PHYSICAL CONDITIONING

 

COURSE                       Physical Conditioning, PHED 1000, 1 credit hour

 

COURSE                      Physical Conditioning (1)  This course is designed for students wishing to keep physically fit through strenuous exercises.  Studies the effect exercises have on the body.  

         

                                                May be taken two times for credit.

COURSE GOALS          The general education goal of this course is to allow students an opportunity to develop habits for wholesome living.  This course also seeks to provide opportunities to apply problem solving skills to life situations.  The course additionally provides an opportunity for further development of oral and written communication skills.

A.          Grading System

 

The grading system is based on a point system.  The total possible points a student can achieve equals 100.  Grades will be assigned as follows:

                                    90-100             =              A

                                    80-89               =              B

                                    70-79               =              C

                                    60-69               =              D

                                    Below 60            =              F

 

B.          Explanation of Grading System

           

There are 100 possible points in this course.  The points are awarded on the following basis:

           

1.      70 Points – Attendance, punctuality, proper dress (see Other Policies and Procedures), participation, and Instructor Observation.

 

2.      10 Points – Students must summarize five fitness articles.  These articles should include author, title of magazine or journal, date, and page numbers.  All articles MUST be typed and should be one-half to one page in length. The articles must be single-spaced.

 

3.      10 Points – Each student will be required to assess his/her caloric input, output, and percentage of carbohydrate, protein, and fat for one week day and weekend day of the same week.  Record calories consumed and calories expended on sheets attached to the syllabus.  Determine calories consumed using appendix provided or from food labels.  Determine calories expended using appendix provided with syllabus.

 

4.      10 Points – Test – A test will be given the last day of the semester to determine knowledge of the following:

 

a.       THE FIT FORMULA

b.      Target Heart Rate

c.       Basal Metabolic Rate

d.      Protein RDA

e.       Major Muscle Identifications

f.        Exercise Knowledge for Muscle Groups

g.       Exercise Room Etiquette

 

 

C.      Other Policies and Procedures

         

1.                  The policy relating to cheating and student conduct can be found in the College Student Handbook.

 

2.                  Persistent unexcused absences can result in the instructor having the student administratively withdrawn from the class.  The procedure involves the recommendation of the instructor to administratively withdraw the student.  If the Dean of the College approves the recommendation, the student is withdrawn from the class.

 

3.                  It is the student’s responsibility to notify the instructor when he/she is tardy in order to avoid being marked absent.  Three tardies will count as a class cut.

 

4.                  The student should have a physical examination prior to taking an activity course (especially physical conditioning).  Otherwise, the student will be taking the course at his or her own risk.

 

5.                  All students will be required to dress appropriately for all workouts.  Students not dressing appropriately will not be allowed to participate in the workouts which will result in the loss of attendance points.  Students must wear shorts, sweats, jogging clothes, or appropriate fitness apparel.  Jeans, khakis and other forms of dress are not acceptable for class participation. 

 

6.                  Leaving class early or arriving late will result in the loss of attendance points.

 

7.                  Children are not allowed to attend this class.

 

D.          Absences

 

Since none of the above can be demonstrated unless student is in attendance, absences will be handled in the following manner:

           

ABSENCES

 

1st Absence            -     No penalty

            2nd Absence           -     Ten points deducted

3rd Absence            -     Twenty points deducted

4th Absence            -     Thirty points deducted

            5th Absence            -     Forty points deducted

6th Absence            -     F in the course
