Course Information

Course Description:  A course designed to acquaint the student with community health problems.  An overview of the health agencies and community organizations as they relate to the total area of health and community; public health work, disease control, and special group problems.  Emphasis will be given to developing health habits for wholesome living.

Course Objectives:   As a result of successfully completing the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the influence of present day philosophy and history of the community health care program.

  2. Explain the importance of community health including pollution factors, agencies

    promoting community health, and international health agencies.

  3. Examine consumer health issues including intelligent selection of health products and agencies.

  4. Analyze safety education including occupational, home, recreational and school safety.

  5. Identify the health science professional careers as they function in health agencies.

  6. Explain how community health programs are planned and successfully implemented.

  7. Devise and implement a community health intervention based on material presented in class.

The General Education Goal: 

The general education goal of this course is to provide  students with an

opportunity to develop an awareness of the relationship between physical and

mental well being and give training in skills that can be used to maintain a

healthy balance in this relationship.

 

Courses Outcomes Statement:  

As a result of successful completion of this course the outcome will assessed through

class participation/discussion, written examinations and outside assignments.  Exams may

include multiple choice, true/false, matching and short essays.  The oral presentation is

assessed on the student's ability to organize and verbalize a health topic before the

class.

Assessment and Grading

Testing Procedures:  Three exams will be given throughout the semester. 

Plagiarism:  Cheating, and other forms of dishonesty are prohibited.  Student guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly through participation or assistance, are immediately responsible to the instructor of the class.  In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions which may be imposed through the regular institutional procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign an F or a zero for the exercise or examination or to assign an F in the course.

 

Grading Procedure:        

           

20% -  Oral Report - Each student will be required to present an oral report to the class

          on an approved community health topic.  

 

60% ‑ 3 Chapter Tests.  The final test will be given on the scheduled exam date.

                                                         

20% ‑ Outside assignments ‑ Students will be allowed to select one of the following:

  1. Summarize ten articles that discusses a current community/population health

    issue.  Use proper APA style.  Text must be typed, proofread, contain no

    typographical errors, have a cover page, double space text, contain appropriate page number at least two pages in length.  Assignment must be received on time or will not be accepted.  

     

  2. Term paper ‑ minimum five pages typed.  The paper must include a title sheet and a

    bibliography with a minimum of four sources.  The topic must be approved.  Text must be typed, proofread, contain no typographical errors, have a cover page, double space text, contain appropriate page number at least two pages in length.  Assignment must be received on time or will not be accepted.  

     

  3. Put together a scrapbook of articles on a community/population social problems,

    disease or health issues.  Articles must be typed. 

     

  4. Community Service Learning Project:  Help your community:  Volunteer at a community/population health organization, or senior citizens home.  Minimum 5 hours of volunteer work.  Community service is defined as giving your time and talent to assist others.  Students do not receive monetary compensation for this work.  Examples of services activities will be discussed in class. At the end of the semester submit 4 type written pages (minimum) of your experience.  A class presentation of your experience will be required.  

                                    

Grading Scale:

The grading scale is based on the following:

90 ‑ 100 = A
80 ‑  89 =  B
70 ‑  79 =  C
60 ‑  69 =  D
 60< =  F
Incomplete=    I

Mid-term Deficiencies “Students who are in danger of receiving a grade below the accepted minimum at mid-term will receive by mail notices indicating the lack of satisfactory progress.”  

N =Audit - No grade or credit.  The student must have registered as an audit in order to receive this grade.

W=Withdrawal - A grade of W is given by the admissions office after a student has processed a drop/add  form through the Admissions Office.  Note:  The instructor does have the right to administratively withdraw a student from class resulting in a grade of W; but this is not automatic.  Students wishing to withdraw must do so through SOTEP and the Admissions Office.  Please consult with me prior to withdrawing from the course.

I=Incomplete - An incomplete is given at the discretion of the instructor and must meet the following conditions: 

(a) Student attends regularly.

(b) Student has completed 80% of the course work and is passing.

(c) The instructor feels the student can realistically complete the course work in the following semester.

 

Note:  If the course work is not completed prior to the exam period of the following semester, the grade is automatically converted to an F by the Admissions Office.

Class Participation
  There is no substitute for class participation.  You are expected to actively participate.

Class Attendance:  Students are required to attend all class meetings.  More than 2 absences will result in a 5 point reduction in your final grade for excused absence.  Excused absences are limited to medical emergencies that can be certified in writing by a physician or participation in a VSCC authorized event. 

Punctuality:  Three tardiness equal one absences.  Consistent and punctual attendance is critical to your successful completion of this course.  The student must participate in in any activities. 
Course Ground Rules

NOTE:   I HAVE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR EXCUSES!!!!

  1. You are expected to be prepared for class - this include bringing textbook/paper/pen to class, reading the textbook and looking over notes in preparation for class.

  2. You should show review the WebCT calendar before every class so you can keep

    updated with the class expectations.

  3. Professional behavior is expected of all students.

  4. Inappropriate class conduct (cursing, etc.) may result in a reduced final grade or

    failure to complete of the course.

  5.  Please – Always Produce “College. Work”

  6. Neatness is expected with all assignments.  Points could be deducted for messy work.  Students will be given a grade of zero when assignments are turned in on spiral notebook paper.  Assignments must be typed handwritten work is not acceptable.

Please note:  you will receive a faster response if contacting me by e-mail using WebCT.  If contacting me by phone, please leave a message for me o the office line.  Say your name clearly and give  your telephone number, first.  Then leave your message.  If you do not have an answering machine, and your call has not been returned within 24 hour during regular business days, please call again.  I will not discuss or give out any grades by telephone.  If you do not have an answering machine, it will be your responsibility to call me back if I am unable to leave a message.  If you use email in WebCT look under your course Personal Health and your section number.  Always include a subject line when sending an e-mail.  The professor will send a reply within 24 hour from receiving your email.  Use standard 12 points.

Financial Attendance Policy
If you are receiving Title IV financial assistance (PELL GRANT, Student Loan or SEOG grant), you must regularly attend class a (minimum of the first full week) or be subject to repay PART or ALL of the federal Financial Aid you receive for the semester.
