Course Description: A study of developmentally appropriate practices and the teacher’s role in supporting development of young children. An emphasis will be placed on curriculum planning including goals, environment, roles of teachers and parents, materials, and settings. Field experiences required.

Course Objectives:

1.  Students will gain knowledge of the diversity of programs available for young children and their families.

2.  Students will gain knowledge of how young children grow and learn.

3.  Students will identify practices, which are developmentally and individually appropriate for young children, including those with delays or disabilities.

4.  Students will learn techniques for supporting children’s physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and communicative development in the classroom.

*Text and resource material readings

*Observe and document development of one child in 4 different domains.

*Develop creative art, math, science, and literacy experiences for young children.

*Develop a resource file of activities for math, science, literacy, and art targeted for a specific age group.

*Book Presentations

*Exams

Student Responsibilities:

1.  Assigned work is due on the assigned date. Points will be deducted for work turned in late. Written work should be typed 1.5 or double-spaced unless stated otherwise. Spelling and grammar will be taken into consideration. Always proofread your work prior to turning it in.

2.  The mid-term and final exams will be given on information given in readings and class discussions. Note taking would be helpful, and attendance is a must. If you must be absent for an exam, arrangements must be made with me prior to the scheduled exam that day.

3.     Attendance is considered critical to the class. Students are responsible for content of the class missed and any assignments given. Absence due to illness or death in the immediate family is considered excused. Please talk with me if you have a problem with attendance.
