ECED 2010: Safe, Healthy, and Learning Environments, Fall 2004

Textbook: Safety, Nutrition, and Health in Early Education, 2nd Edition (Cathie Robertson), Delmar Publishers

Course Description:

This course is designed to enable the early childhood professional to further his or her understanding of the basic health, safety, and nutritional principles in providing care to young children.

Included is a study of growth, disease, accident prevention, and principles of creating appropriate learning environments for young children.

Objectives:

   1.     Students will gain knowledge and skills necessary in providing a safe environment for young children to
           prevent and reduce injuries.
   2.     Students will gain knowledge and skills to implement good health and nutrition practices.
   3.     Students will use knowledge of child development to create environments that encourage play,
           exploration, and learning.

Major Course Requirements:

1.     Textbook Readings (For each class)

  1. Written Reflections and Reviews on Selected Readings (3-5)
  2. Group and Individual Projects Related to Topics (2-3) (i.e. see below)

a.     Develop a Nutrition/Cooking Activity

b.     Develop a Learning Center

c.     Develop a Health/Safety Bulletin Board  

4.     Individual Journal Writing/Reflections on Practices

  1. Resolving Health & Safety Ethical Dilemmas Using NAEYC’s Code of Ethics
  2. Assignments, Video Reviews, Class Attendance and Participation is MANDATORY
  3. Research paper on approved topic of choice
  4. Autobiography of at least 300 words

 

 

Class will meet the following Tuesdays from 6:00-8:50 (topics and assignments listed beside date)

Aug. 31 - Introduction to class and review of syllabus

Sept. 7 - Discussion of Chapters 1 & 2

Sept. 14 - Autobiography due, Class Discussion

Sept. 21 - Choose Research Paper Topic, Chapters 3 & 4 questions due.

Sept. 28 – Begin discussion of chapters 5 & 6, Class Discussion, Safety Board due.

Oct. 5 - Chapter 7, Bring a cooking and nutrition activity to present to class.

Oct. 12 - Mid-term

Oct. 19 - No Class – Fall Break

Oct. 26 - Chapters 8 & 9 Discussion

Nov. 2 - Chapter 10, Bring Center Health Policies to compare/contrast

Nov. 9 - Chapter 11, Bring Rough Draft to Class

Nov. 16 - Chapter 12, Class Discussion

Nov. 23 - Chapter 13,Turn in Research Paper

Nov. 30 - Chapters 14 & 15, Class Discussion

Dec. 7 - Review for final exam

Dec. 14 - Final exam

 

Attendance is mandatory as much of the material covered may be presented in other forms for example videos, handouts and hands on activities.

 

Class will not meet if TTU and/or Vol State cancels classes. If you are not sure about class meeting during inclement weather please contact me at (931) 372-3560 or the TECTA office at (931) 372-6561. I will try to phone everyone if class is cancelled. Attendance is mandatory. After the second absence, documentation for each additional absence must be submitted.

Grades will be averaged on the following scale: See grade summary sheet for individual assignments and calculation of final grade.
