Course Description: History 1110 (3 Credit Hours) is a study of the emergence and development of civilizations in Europe Asia, Africa, and America using the universal culture pattern. An analysis and comparison of economic, social, political, intellectual, religious, and aesthetic characteristics of civilizations will be emphasized. Prerequisites: DSPW 0800 and DRPR 0800 or acceptable placement scores.
Textbook: Bentley and Ziegler, Traditions and Encounters: A Global Perspective on the
Past. Volume I: From the Beginnings to 1500 2nd edition (New York: McGraw Hill,
2003).
Supplementary Book: Kevin Reilly, Worlds of History: A Comparative Reader. Volume
I: To 1550 (Boston: Bedford-St. Martin’s, 2000).
Learning Objectives: Students will learn the major outlines and important details of world political, economic, social, intellectual, and cultural history from prehistory to the 1600s. Students will also develop critical thinking skills and effective communication through writing.
Attendance: Required in the class. I will take roll each class periods, giving both the instructor and an opportunity to learn the names of the members of the class. Any absence exceeding six (6) will result in a reduced grade for the class. Late assignments will not be accepted, nor will make-up tests be given, without a valid documented excuse.
Chronic tardiness, or any other disruption of class, interferes with the learning process for all and will not be tolerated.
Note-taking in a college-ruled bound notebook is required of each student. Students may be asked to submit these notebooks periodically though-out the semester to ensure adequate note-taking. Students must also perform all other class assignments and participate in class discussions and activities.

Testing: Examinations will generally consist of identifications or short answers, short essays, and a longer essay, based on the information in the lectures and readings. Essay questions stress the ability to compare, analyze, and synthesize the material.
Grading Scale: This class will use a straight ten point scale. 90-100 = A, 80-89 = B,
70-79 = C, 60-69 = D, below 60 = F.
Book Review: Each Student will read a book about a person (a biography) in world history who lived before 1600, then submit a written book review of the work. The book must be approved by the instructor by September 22. The review must follow the instructor’s guidelines for writing a review. The book review is due November 26.
Cheating: Any form of cheating, including plagiarism, on any assignment, test, or course work will result in ether a grade of “0” for the that assignment, test or work, or a grade of “F” for the entire class. Plagiarism is defined in the American Heritage Dictionary as “stealing or using the ideas or writings of another as one’s own.”
ADA Statement: It is the student’s responsibility to self-identify with the Office of Dis-ability Services (Campus Center – C 206B) in order to receive accommodations. Only those students with appropriate documentation will receive services.
