Ms. McLean is a teacher of French, English, and English as a Second Language.  She has studied in both France and Canada.  She has taken students to France during the academic year and in the summer.  She invites your questions about French classes, study abroad, and future trips to French speaking countries.

Prof. Michelle Vandiver

Michelle Vandiver holds a B.A. in Spanish with a minor in Psychology from the University of North Alabama in Florence and a M.A. in Spanish and Linguistics from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.  Professor Vandiver has studied and lived in Guadalajara, Mexico for two summers.  She also studied and lived in Salamanca and Alcalá de Henares, Spain during two summers.  She has traveled to various Spanish speaking countries including Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru, Ecuador, and Spain.  In May of 2004, Professor Vandiver and Professor Effland took the first group from Volunteer State to Spain for a ten day trip.  The Foreign Language Department plans to continue to offer these trips to Volunteer State students.  This summer Professor Vandiver also spent 10 days in Costa Rica.

Prof. Robert L. Effland, Spanish

 Prof. Effland holds the degrees of A.A. from a community college,  B.A., M.A., and Ed.S.  from the University of Iowa.  He studied in the doctoral program at U.C.L.A. and has studied in Guadalajara, Mexico with the University of Arizona.   He has taught at a community college and directed the Language Institute and Foreign Language Department at Marycrest International University in Davenport, Iowa.  He has lived and studied in Mexico and Spain and taken groups to both countries.  He enjoys working with technology to provide interesting supplemental delivery and practice of foreign language study.  "I love it here at Vol State and enjoy living in Gallatin and getting to know the Middle Tennessee area.  All the people, including students, faculty, staff and administration are great."  Prof. Vandiver and I had a great time taking a group of students, faculty and community members to Spain in May 04 and look forward to our trip to Costa Rica this May.
