Biology 1010/1020 Lab Syllabus Essentials

 

DESCRIPTION:  The laboratory component of this course provides for practical hands-on involvement in science and science inquiry.  Lecture topics are exemplified in the lab program to promote understanding and reinforce lecture material.  The lecture and lab schedules will be coordinated to coincide as closely as possible.  Exercises will be performed either individually or in small groups.  Read through the lab ahead of time.  The instructor will provide an introduction and guidance during the laboratory.  All students are expected to participate fully in all laboratories.

 

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES: 

All policies and procedures not described below are contained in the lecture syllabus and will apply to the laboratory as well.

 

GRADING:

The laboratory grade will count 30% of the course grade.  It will be derived from four sources of equal weight:

                                

1.      QUIZ AVERAGE –The lowest quiz will be dropped.

2.      LAB PRACTICAL I – covering labs    1 – 4

3.      LAB PRACTICAL II – covering labs    6 - 7

4.      LAB PRACTICAL III – covering labs   9 - 13

 

NOTE: A student must have an average of 50 or above in order to receive any credit from the laboratory component.

 

                               Example:        87 lecture average             87   x  0.70%   =  60

                                                      49 lab average                       0   x  0.30%   =    0

                                                      FINAL AVERAGE                                        =   60

 

ABSENCE FROM EXAMINATIONS,
QUIZZES OR LABS:
  There will be NO makeup for a missed lab practical or quiz, and a 0 will be recorded.  But, this lab occurs several times a week, and may be made up, (including a rearranged  practical and/or quiz) with an excused absence and approval from the instructor.

 

OFFICIAL ABSENCES FROM THE COLLEGE:  absences excused by the appropriate Vice President for VSCC related functions will be handled individually.  Under these circumstances, accommodations will be made ONLY when arranged in ADVANCE of the absence.

Note:  The weekly quiz grade will be a 5 minute quiz administered promptly at the beginning of lab covering material from the previous lab.  There will be no make-up quizzes from a missed lab.  One quiz grade will be dropped.
