     Tennessee Electronic Library News

State Senator Diane Black was among those honored at the TENN-SHARE Fall Conference at Nashville Public Library Downtown.  Sen. Black helped in obtaining an appropriation of $1 million in recurring state funding for the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL).  Librarians from Sumner County, including Volunteer State Community College, were on hand to thank Senator Black for her support.  Until now, TEL has been paid for with federal funds from the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) through the Tennessee Department of State.

Volunteer State Community College is an active member of TENN-SHARE, a statewide consortium of all types of libraries.  Volunteer State students, faculty, and staff located more than 20,000 articles in the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL) last year.

TEL is a collection of articles from reference books, magazines and journals arranged by subject in databases available to residents of Tennessee from any computer with online access.  The articles and information found in TEL, available 24/7, come from established newspapers, magazines and journals such as The New York Times, Newsweek, and the Journal of the American Medical Association rather than from unreliable general Internet sources.

Our Volunteer State librarians are ready to help answer questions about TEL.  Please talk with a librarian at the Reference Desk or phone 615-230-3405.  The TEL databases are provided at Livingston and McGavock Centers and are available to all distance learners through the library’s webpage www.volstate.edu/library.
