BIOL 1030
ESSENTIALS OF BIOLOGY
DESCRIPTION: The laboratory component of this course provides
practical, hands-on involvement in science and scientific inquiry. The laboratory activities, involving a survey
of the diverse forms of life on earth, stand-alone and are treated separately
from lecture topics. Activities will be
performed by individuals or in small groups, as directed by the instructor, who
will provide a brief overview of each topic, as well as any additional
instructions. The laboratory instructor
will be present throughout the lab period to guide and assist students. Supplementing the laboratory experiences will
be audiovisual presentations and/or field trips. Students will receive instruction in the use
of appropriate scientific tools and instruments. The scientific method of problem solving will
receive emphasis.

GRADING: The laboratory grade will count 25% of the course
grade. It will be calculated from four
sources of equal weight: Three
laboratory examinations and the average of a series of weekly quizzes. Each quiz will cover the previous week’s
laboratory activities. The lowest grade will be omitted in
calculating the quiz average.
ABSENCE FROM
EXAMINATIONS OR QUIZZES:
Absence from a lab session
has two consequences. The instructor
will record a zero for any missed
quiz, and the student will not benefit from mastering the material presented in
the laboratory. There is no provision for making up missed quizzes or examinations,
except under the conditions set forth in the College Catalog and Student
Handbook.
Under extenuating circumstances and providing advance notice is given, a student may attend an
alternate lab section the same week as
the absence, with the approval of all
instructors involved.
OTHER
INFORMATION: The laboratory experiences
are an important part of any course in biology, but especially in this
one. Regular attendance and adequate
preparation for each session will earn a respectable grade in lab. Anything
else will not! Plan to arrive on
time, for quizzes will be given immediately at the start of class, and plan to
stay for the entire lab period, because you cannot do an adequate job if you do
not!
