Qin Shi Huangdi The first emperor of unified China was of the Qin Dynasty. His birth name was Ying Zheng, but he changed his name to Qin (Ch'in) Shi Huangdi to reflect his unification of the six warring states of China. In 221 BC, the culmination of his defeat of these other states led to his name being synonymous with China. Shi Huang was a megalomaniac concerned with the occult and the afterlife. His quest for immortality led to his commissioning artisans to construct an army for him to lead into the hereafter.
