Common Advising Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I need to change my major. How much will that affect me?
A: Hard to say. It depends on what you're changing to and what you are changing from. Set up an appointment and we'll run a degree audit on your new major. You will also need to change your major with the Records Office.

Q: After I finish at Vol State, I am going to a 4 year school. Will all my classes transfer?
A: In most cases, yes, all of your classes will transfer. There will be some exceptions to this obviously, but for the most part, if you have followed the curriculum guide, there shouldn't be any difficulties. To be sure, check out the transfer guides. These show exactly what your courses will become at local 4 year universities.

Q: My friend and I are both doing education, but she doesn't have to take some of the same classes that I do. Why is that?
A: It is likely that you and your friend are working on different kinds of degrees. Vol State offers an A.A.S. (Associate of Applied Science) and an A.S. (Associate of Science) degree. The A.A.S. is generally a "terminal" degree--in other words, that's all there is to it. It generally is used for those wanting to work in day centers or as teaching aides. The A.S. is the foundation for a 4 year degree and will be needed at a four year school. If you are going to be an elementary or secondary teacher, then the A.S. is the way to go.

Q: I'm transferring to a 4 year school. How do I know what to take there?
A: Obviously, as I don't work at the four year school in question, I can't answer that in great detail. However, I can tell you that they will also have curriculum guides found in their catalogs. Thus, you need to go the website for the college you would like to attend and find the link to their catalog. This should have all the information you need!

Q: I've been told you're my advisor. Do I really need an advisor?
A: Honestly? No, you don't. If you keep up with your curriculum guides and you read the catalog, the only thing you really need me for is signing your Intent to Graduate form. However, I'm available for whatever reasonable questions you may have. (By reasonable I basically mean that I won't make your schedule, but I'll answer whatever questions you need answered!).
