Common Advising Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I just applied to Vol State and declared a major. How do I know what classes to take?
A: I like easy questions! If you've already chosen a major, then you need to either a) consult the catalog or b) go to my curriculum guides page. The curriculum guide for your major will lay out exactly what classes you need to register for.

Q: Okay, I've looked at the curriculum guides. How do I know register for classes? Do you do that for me?
A: Generally no, I will not make schedules for you, but I will be happy to consult about classes or look over a completed schedule. As far as creating a schedule, the best thing to do is take that curriculum guide and then go to the "Class Schedule" page (found off of www.volstate.edu). The Class Schedule page will show all the classes available for the upcoming term and will allow you to piece together a schedule.

Q: Someone told me about tests I have to take. What tests do I have to take?
A: There should be at least two (2), possibly three, tests you have to take. The first test is a placement test. If your ACT scores are not adequate, then you will need to take placement tests. These will determine what (if any) remedial classes you may need to take. Once this is determined, the next test you need to worry about is the Computer Literacy Test. All students graduating from Vol State are required to be computer literate, so you can either take CIS 100 or take the test. If you don't score high enough on the test, you will need to take CIS 100. Thus, it's better to take the Computer Literacy Test sooner rather than later! Finally, when you are ready to graduate, you will need to take Vol State's exit exam. This is a requirement for graduation. All testing can be scheduled through the Testing Center.

Q: I'm close to completing all my classes. What do I need to do to graduate?
A: You will need to complete an Intent to Graduate form. This must be done the semester before you graduate. You get this form from the Records Office and then bring it to me. We'll do a quick check of what you still have to take and then I sign off on the form.

Q: HELP! I don't remember what classes I've taken!
A: No problem. Go into PRIDE On-line and do a degree audit. The degree audit will tell you what have taken and what you still need to take.
