How is this course taught without meetings?

The course delivery and management system for this online course is WebCT.  All homework assignments, quizzes, and major tests (except the Final Exam) are submitted online.  The comprehensive Final Exam must be taken at the student's "home school" in the student's geographical area.  Orientation for the class is done online.  Students in this course should expect to spend at least the same amount of time and effort doing this class online (6 to 10 hours per week) as they would in a traditional lecture class in a regular classroom.
 

Do I have to come to campus to complete this course?

Yes, but only to take the Final Exam, which will be taken at the student's declared "home school" --- one of the community colleges or universities of the Tennessee Board of Regents.

How do I access the course content and materials?

Students enrolled in this online course will get their primary instruction by reading and studying the online Lectures (notes).  This may be done anywhere the student has access to a personal computer linked to the Internet, including those in VSCC computer labs.  Go to http://tbr.eduprise.com to log into the course web site on WebCT.  Then click on Course Modules in the Course Menu in the column on the left.

What are the computer requirements?

The minimum requirements can be found at http://www.tn.regentsdegrees.org/students/hardware_software.htm. Specific hardware requirements for this course include a scientific calculator or a graphing calculator. Hand-held computers and programmable computer-like calculators (like the TI-92) are not permitted.  Sharing a calculator between students is not permitted on tests or quizzes.
 

How do I get started?

First, you need to purchase the required textbook for this course, which is College Algebra, Larson & Hostetler, 6th edition, Houghton Mifflin.  Go to http://tbr.eduprise.com to log into the course web site on WebCT and do the MATH 1130 Orientation.  In the Course Menu on the left, click on [Course Modules], then [How MATH 1130 Works (Orientation)].

How is attendance taken in a distance course?

Homework Assignments must be completed by the due date stated in the Course Calendar.  On or before this date, students will submit the answers to five homework problems in a period of ten minutes, which can only be done successfully if the homework is completed beforehand.

What is expected of me in this course?

Although traditional class meetings are not a regular part of this course, there will be meaningful opportunities for all students to participate in verbal and non-verbal exchanges with the instructor and with other students.  Participation in the following components of the course is required or strongly recommended: an Online Communications Exercise in the first few days of the semester, reading and studying the online Lectures (notes) before doing the required homework, interaction with classmates and the instructor using the email and discussion components of WebCT, and online review sessions using the chat and whiteboard components of WebCT.

On the first day of the semester, go to http://tbr.eduprise.com to log into the course web site on WebCT.  Click on [Assignments] in the Course Menu to view a listing homework assignments and due dates.
 

How do I know when assignments are due?

Click on [Assignments] in the Course Menu to view a listing homework assignments and due dates.  Due dates are also posted in the calendar component of WebCT.

How do I communicate with other students?

Students are encouraged to use the email, chat, whiteboard, and discussion features of WebCT.

How do I take a test?

All homework assignments, quizzes, and major tests (except the Final Exam) are submitted online.  In WebCT, click on [Tests and Quizzes] in the Course Menu on or before the stated deadline.  The comprehensive Final Exam is a proctored test done on paper at the student's "home school" in the student's geographical area.  A student who must miss a scheduled test due to an emergency should make every attempt to notify the instructor (and/or test proctor) prior to the test deadline.
 

Can I finish the course early?

Yes.  Students who work ahead of the calendar deadlines may go ahead and take the tests when ready, but must contact the instructor at least three days beforehand in order to take a test early.  Final Exams must be taken at the scheduled time and will not be returned to the student. There will be no exemptions from taking the Final Exam.  Specifics of Extra Credit on the Final Exam will be announced after the last major test.

Grades are posted online in WebCT.  To view homework assignments, quizzes, and tests grades, click on [Grades] in the Course Menu.
