Familiarize yourself with these requirements in order to maximize your opportunity for success in your distance learning course. After you review the course orientation, you can begin working with your distance learning course content on the first day of classes.

Does this course cost the same as a regular course?

Yes, this course costs the same as a regular course.  You will need to purchase a textbook and an Access Code for the course.  New Textbooks have an Access Code inside; Used Textbooks will need a new Access Code which may be purchased On-Line or at the Bookstore.  If you are on Financial Aid and need assistance in that area, please contact the Financial Aid office at 615-452-3456.

Does this course count the same as a regular course?

Yes.  This course is a 3-semester credit hour course.  It is a regular course, just being delivered through the Internet.

Does this course transfer?

This course is not designed to transfer.  It may transfer as an Elective.  Please check the college catalog for the college you wish to transfer it to.

How can I contact my professor?

How is this course taught without meetings?

You will receive an email in your Vol State email.  EVERY student enrolled at Vol State has an email account.  Go to the Vol State web page and click on Students, then click on Student Email that is in the blue bar at the top of the screen.  You will be asked to information about yourself to access your account.  You will then be given your email name and password.  The email will arrive a week or so before time for the class to start.  It will answer questions about the course and how to access the course.  Once inside the course, all instructions will be given at the Calendar on the Homepage.

Do I have to come to campus to complete this course?

You will not have to come to the campus for this course.

How do I access the course content and materials?

First, you will need to purchase your Textbook, The Future of Business, 5ed.,ISBN 0-324-234236.  That text will be shrink wrapped and will include an Access Code.  Keep that Code--it can only be used one time.  Go to the Vol State Website, www.volstate.edu and click on WebCT.  You will need your Username and Password.  Those are the same as for your email account.  Key that information in, then you will be asked for your Access Code.  Key in the Access code (in the blue folder) with your Text.  Double check the code before pressing Enter; that code can be used only one time!  Once you are inside WebCT you will see a listing of the courses you are taking On-Line and those courses that are being enhanced by WebCT.  Click on the title of the course and go into the course.  Click on Calendar on the Homepage (where you automatically go when you enter the course; all the icons are there for the course--FAQs, ReadMeFirst, Syllabus, etc.  Click on Calendar and then on the number of the day and you will see instructions for that day.

What are the computer requirements?

Hardware Requirements:
Pentium 166 or better; 32 Megabytes of RAM or better; Windows 95 or higher; 28.8 modem or better (56k preferred); Dependable internet service provider (ISP)

Software Requirements:
RealPlayer Basic; Internet Explorer (version 5.0 or higher) or Netscape Navigator (version 4.7 or higher but lower than version 6/0); Microsoft Excel (version XP or higher), Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Office XP or higher, etc.

How do I get started?

Once inside the course, read the file, ReadMeFirst, before starting anything.  Then click on the Calendar, click on the number of the day you wish to view.  Instructions are there for Assignments, Quizzes, etc.  Explore!  Look at all the Icons (pictures of things to click on) and learn as much about the course as possible.  You can't hurt a thing; but, what you learn will be helpful to you throughout the course.

What do I do if I need assistance with technology or the course?

Volunteer State Community College’s Help Desk: (615) 454-8600 (extension 3302), or (888) 335-8722 (extension 3302), or 230-3312 Toll Free.  A statement that explains the type of support that can be expected is available from the Help Desk.  You may ask questions here; but the Help Desk will not try to repair your computer.

How is attendance taken in a distance course?

Students are told to send an email to me once inside the course.  That email causes you to be marked present for the first meeting.  Then, homework and quiz dates must be met; late homework will not be accepted, so those dates count as times of attendance.

What is expected of me in this course?

You will be expected to follow instructions.  You must read.  Everything you have to do will be in written format.  The Calendar is the driving force for the course; check it frequently.  There will be emails from students to instructor and from instructor to students.  Read those emails and keep current on what is happening in the course.  Check into the course at least EVERY OTHER DAY.  Tests and Assignments must be done on time.

Where do I find my assignments?

Go to the Calendar to see the number of your Assignment.  Then click on Assignments to get a detailed account of your assignments.

How do I know when assignments are due?

On the Assignments page you will see the date and time the assignment is due.

How do I communicate with other students?

You may reach other students by going to the Homepage, clicking on Communicate, then click on Email, Click on Compose Message, Click on Browse and select the name of the individual you wish to email.  If you hold down Control and click you will select names but you may skip names; if you hold down Shift and click, you will select names in a list. After the name/names have been selected they will appear in the To area of the email form.  Compose the message by keying it in, then click on Send.

How do I submit my assignments?

Go to Assignments, Click on the Assignment number that you are working on. Read what you are to do. Go to Word (your Word Processing software) and key the questions in the assignment and then the answers. Save the material and give it a name --your last name, your 1st initial, and the assignment number.  Go back to Assignments and scroll down to the bottom of the page to submit your work. You will have to Browse to find the file you just saved, click on it and it will upload into the course, then click Submit to send it to me.

How do I take a test?

Go to Quizzes.  Click on the Quiz/Test number that you are to take.  You will be asked if you are ready to start the quiz/test.  Click "Yes."  The clock starts ticking.  Each test is timed; you must click on the correct answer and then click on Save Answer in order for the answer to be saved.  Your test will be graded automatically and you will be able to see your grade once the time for the test has lapsed.

Can I finish the course early?

No.  This course is structured so that Assignments and Tests are required on certain dates.

How do I find my grades?

Go to the Homepage.  Click on Student Progress, click on My Grades.  You should be able to access your grades at any time after grades are released on a particular assignment or quiz.
