at Mammoth Cave National Park on May 16, 2006

American chestnut tree in the south-central region of Mammoth Cave
National Park..

At Mammoth Cave National Park, American chestnut is not found on the the thin limestone soils of lower slope-cedar forests (left photo), but it does occur on the sandy soils (derived from sandstone) on the oak-dominated upper slopes  (right photo).
