The solitary Adair County chestnut tree, one of a kind

The large old scars at the base are probably not from blight, but from a dozer scrape.  Arrow indicates one of many cankers on the limbs

Note what appears to be an old lightning strike on one of the main trunks

Forest Ranger Kenneth Pyles by the big tree; he along with District Forester, Billy Fudge, and other foresters helped TACF plant breeders pollinate and collect fruits from this tree.  Note the heavy bur production. Scions were recently sent  in the winter of 2002 to Ed Greenwell of the ACCF for cloning.

This tree has been producing copious sterile fruits (from lack of another pollinating tree) for decades.  Last year hundreds of fertile nuts were produced due to artificial pollination by foresters and TACF workers.
