The Mysteries of Chestnut DNA
2
The First Mystery –
  • DNA is such a simple molecule.  How could it code for so many different genes?

3
The Answer
  • Nature uses a three-letter DNA codon;
  • 64 possible codons for 20 amino acids

4
And this codon usage is almost universal!
  • DNA is DNA, whether it is in a bacterium, a firefly, a chestnut tree, or one of us
5
So there is nothing really mysterious about chestnut DNA
6
We can use knowledge and principles gained from work with other species, such as corn
7
What do we need to know about chestnut that DNA and genetics can tell us?
